How to Apply

To begin using the GI Bill education benefits:

  1. Go to http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp, log in, and select either:
    1. Chapter 30 Active Duty, (22-1990 application)
    2. 1606 Selected Reserve, (22-1990 application)
    3. 1607 REAP, (22-1990 application)
    4. Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill (22-1990 application) or
    5. Chapter 35, Dependents Education Benefits (22-5490 application).
      1. Chapter 35 students should also apply for the Commonwealth of Virginia Dependents Education benefits at http://www.dvs.virginia.gov/. Click the link for Benefits, then Education.
  2. To change your program of study or to change from a previous college/university to LFCC, go to http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp, log in, and select either the:
    1. Chapter 30 Active Duty, (22-1995 Change of Place/Program application)
    2. 1606 Selected Reserve, (22-1995 Change of Place/Program application)
    3. 1607 REAP, (22-1995 Change of Place/Program application)
    4. Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill (22-1995 Change of Place/Program application) or
    5. Chapter 35, Dependents Education Benefits (22-5495 Change of Place/Program application).
      1. Chapter 35 students should also apply for the Commonwealth of Virginia Dependents Education benefits at http://www.dvs.virginia.gov/. Click the link for Benefits, then Education.
  3. Information about the GI Bill programs is available at http://www.gibill.va.gov/
  4. Submit the application and print the confirmation page.
  5. For applicants other than Chapter 35, submit a copy of your confirmation page, DD-214 or NOBE. Also, if you signed up for the kicker program, submit a copy of that document to:

    Department of Veteran Affairs
    PO BOX 4616
    Buffalo, NY 14240-4616
  6. When the first four steps are completed, please send an e-mail to the Veterans Affairs Certifying Official, . Be sure to include:
    1. Your LFCC ID# to let Aaron know these steps are finished so we may complete our part with the Veteran Affairs (VA).
    2. Include which GI Bill benefit program you applied for and the branch of service (if applicable).
  7. For applicants other than Chapter 33 and 35, on the last day of each month of enrollment, go to https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/index.do to verify your enrollment. This will initiate the VA to pay you your eligible benefit amount. (Chapter 33 and 35 will be paid automatically by the VA)
  8. Be sure to follow your program of study requirements as detailed in the College catalog as the VA will not pay for classes that are not required for your program of study.
  9. Pay attention to important dates (last day to add and drop, last day to withdraw, holidays) during the semester as detailed in the course schedule and at our Web site each semester.  
  10. If you change enrollment, please e-mail me ASAP to ensure you receive proper payment and do not receive an overpayment.
  11. Submit any official college and/or military transcripts to LFCC.
    1. Complete the LFCC Transcript Evaluation Request form
    2. To request official military transcripts:

  12. Submit to me the LFCC Request to be Certified for VA Education Benefits form
