Now, Mr. David Chase from Old Dominion University will make some remarks. GOOD MORNING. THANK YOU PRESIDENT THOMPSON- STACY. GREETINGS DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, AND WELCOME TO ALL GATHERED THIS MORNING FOR THIS WONDERFUL OCCASION. I BRING GREETINGS FROM THE MAIN CAMPUS AND DR. NANCY COOLEY, VICE PROVOST FOR DISTANCE LEARNING AND MY BOSS, WHO WAS UNFORTUNATELY UNABLE TO ATTEND. WE ARE TRULY EXCITED TO BE PART OF THIS “GROUND BREAKING” EVENT. OLD DOMINION AND LORD FAIRFAX INITIATED A WONDERFUL PARTNERSHIP IN 1994 WHEN LORD FAIRFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE BECAME ONE OF 13 ‘PILOT’ SCHOOLS TO BEGIN RECEIVING LIVE TELECASTS OF DEGREE PROGRAMS FROM ODU’S MAIN CAMPUS IN NORFOLK. THE VISION OF THE FOUNDERS HAS ENABLED MANY STUDENTS TO EARN DEGREES AND GO ON TO REWARDING CAREERS. TODAY, THE VISION CONTINUES WITH BOTH INSTITUTIONS JOINING FORCES TO BUILD THE CORRON COMMUNITY CENTER WITH SPACE FOR ODU PROGRAMS. THIS CENTER PROMISES AN EXCITING AND WELCOMING NEW ENVIRONMENT WHERE LEARNING, DISCOVERY AND CREATIVITY CAN FLORISH. THIS CENTER IS MORE THAN A BUILDING — IT IS A SYMBOL OF PROGRESS AND A COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE. ODU SHARES IN THAT COMMITMENT AND PLEDGES TO DO ITS BEST TO KEEP THE PARTNERSHIP STRONG AND VIBRANT. DRIVING IN THIS MORNING, I RECALLED AN EXPERIENCE FROM LAST FRIDAY THAT I HAD THE PLEASURE OF JOINING IN. IT COULD HAVE OCCURRED ON ANY CAMPUS, BUT THIS PARTICULAR EVENT HAPPENED TO OCCUR AT ODU. WE HOSTED A MEETING THERE ON THE NEW G.I. BILL THAT HAS BEEN SIGNED INTO LAW. THE SPEAKER WAS THE CHIEF OF EDUCATION FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS. WE HAD ANTICIPATED A SHOWING OF ABOUT 100 PEOPLE BUT THE FINAL TALLEY REVEALED SOMETHING ON A MAGNITUDE FOUR TIMES THAT MANY; ROUGHLY 400 PEOPLE. WE WERE DELIGHTED WITH THE TURNOUT, TO SAY THE LEAST. BUT I CAME AWAY FROM THAT ASSEMBLY WITH A STARK REMINDER OF JUST HOW MUCH PEOPLE VALUE EDUCATION, AND HOW IMPORTANT EDUCATION IS TO THEM IN THESE TOUGH TIMES. THIS NEW CENTER IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE VALUE THAT WE ALL PLACE ON EDUCATION. BEFORE I LEAVE THE PODIUM, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY TO CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS, TO STAFF, FACULTY AND STUDENTS, AS WELL AS OUR CIVIC LEADERS AND ALL OTHERS WHO HAVE MADE THIS DAY POSSIBLE. CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE; VERY WELL DONE. LIKEWISE, I WOULD BE REMISS IF I FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE HARD WORK AND EXTRA EFFORT OF OLD DOMINION’S SITE STAFF WHO PLAY SUCH A PIVOTOL ROLE HERE AT THE COLLEGE IN THIS PARTNERSHIP. OUR SITE DIRECTOR NANCY RUDOLPH, UNFORTUNATELY, IS NOT ABLE TO BE WITH US THIS MORNING BUT BARBIE MILLER, HER ASSISTANT, IS HERE AND BARBIE I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU AND NANCY AND THE TEAM HERE FOR ALL THAT YOU DO ON BEHALF OF OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY AND THE STUDENTS AT THIS CAMPUS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. AND IN CLOSING, I WOULD JUST SAY THAT WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF THIS OUTSTANDING TEAM AT LORD FAIRFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THANK YOU.
