Impacting the Community – National Philanthropy Day
Written on: Nov. 5, 2007
What does it mean to be a community? For me, it means support and involvement. It means serving the community through participation in community activities, volunteering for local organizations and/or financially supporting nonprofit entities.
Individuals who support the community through their donation of time and money are changing lives and making the community a better place to live. In an effort to recognize the significant assistance individuals give to community-based organizations and how that assistance impacts the community, the Association of Fundraising Professionals instituted National Philanthropy Day to be held each year on Nov. 15.
On this special day, the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc. seeks to recognize the impact that donors to the Foundation are making on LFCC students. A large portion of the funds raised directly impact students through the Foundation's scholarship program. This important need-based financial assistance program assisted 167 LFCC students this year—students who may not have been able to continue their education if it were not for a scholarship.
Jaime Jackson is one such example. Jackson, a 29-year-old, single mother living with multiple sclerosis, is the first person in her family to attend college. With her mother's support, Jackson juggles classes and works full time in an effort to support her daughter. The LFCC scholarship she received is easing the financial burden she faces and is propelling her forward to achieve her dreams.
To everyone who contributes to the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. or any other nonprofit organization in the area, thank you! Thank you for making our community a better place to live!
