Clean Air Policy

Effective August 1, 2004

Under the Code of Virginia, Title 15.2, Chapter 28, “Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act,” Lord Fairfax Community College establishes a policy to regulate and control smoking of tobacco products within its facilities.  This policy is specifically authorized under Code of Virginia 15.2-2800 and 15.2-2801, which sets forth a statewide regulation on smoking.

  1. Smoking is prohibited within all buildings owned or leased by the College, and within vehicles owned or operated by Lord Fairfax Community College.  This provision shall include any and all off-campus facilities utilized by the College, except for the facilities of any business, industry or other organization where the College may offer specific programs at its site.
  2. The Department of Buildings and Grounds shall post signs conspicuous to public viewing with directions and/or maps showing the designated smoking areas.
  3. Smokers’ Gazebos placed around the exterior of facilities at the Middletown and Fauquier Campuses shall be equipped with cigarette and trash receptacles.  Designated smoking areas are subject to change as determined by the College administration.  Smoking shall be prohibited within 50 feet of any entrance to the College except in the smokers’ gazebos.
  4. It is expected that all members of the College community and visitors to the College’s facilities will comply with the smoke-free environment.  Where individuals are found to be smoking in a smoke-free area, any member of the College community is asked to inform the individual about the smoke-free environment and direct the individual to one of the Smokers’ Gazebos.
  5. College employees are expected to set examples of compliance with this policy.  Supervisors shall address the issue of non-compliance where disciplinary action may be affected through appropriate policies.
