Dr. Henry J. Coffman, Professor in Information Technology

Background and Experience

Prior to teaching at Lord Fairfax Community College, Dr. Coffman worked for the Federal Government for 31 years in positions at the Department of Navy, Defense Mapping Agency, and Interpol. Dr. Coffman worked in numerous types of Information Technology (IT) positions including computer programming, hardware and software troubleshooting, network administration, network design and construction, IT systems design, and IT management. He taught network courses as a full-time Assistant Professor at LFCC from August 2004 to May 2007. From 2007-2009, he was the Director of Technology Services at LFCC and has transitioned back to full-time faculty status.

LFCC Teaching

Dr. Coffman teaches a variety of IT courses with particular emphasis on network security courses (e.g., Network Security Basics ITN 260).

Certifications and Professional Affiliations

Dr. Coffman is certified as a CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) and has held the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) credential. He is affiliated with the International Security Consortium (ISC)2 and a member of CyberWatch, a regional cybersecurity organization sponsored by grants from the U.S. National Security Agency/U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Science Foundation. He was formerly a member of the Doctor of Arts in Community College Education Student Advisory Committee at George Mason University.

Personal Interests

Dr. Coffman is involved in several computer-related activities as a hobby. In addition, he collects toy Hess trucks and certain sets of coins. He also enjoys the outdoors and hiking.
