Bylaws of the LFCC Alumni Advisory Council

Article 1. Name

The name of the organization shall be Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Alumni Advisory Council (hereafter referred to as the "organization").

Article 2. Purposes

The objectives of this organization shall be to:

  • Organize LFCC alumni for the promotion of the welfare of the College.
  • Maintain a strong relationship between the alumni and the College.
  • Help strengthen the long-term financial health of the College through support of its fundraising efforts.
  • Foster and sustain a sense of collegiality among its members.
  • Foster and promote participation of the alumni in the activities of the College.

Article 3. Membership

The categories of membership in this organization shall be:

  • Section 1: Alumni Membership - Persons who have received a degree and/or certificate from LFCC.
  • Section 2: Affiliate Membership - Former students, current College employees and/or retired College employees who do not fall into the alumni membership category.
  • Section 3: Membership in this organization shall be for life.
  • Section 4: No dues shall be charged for the privilege of being a member.
  • Section 5: Only alumni members may vote and hold office in this organization.

Article 4. Officers

  • Section 1: The officers of the organization shall be a chair, vice chair and secretary. Officers shall be elected by a majority of LFCC alumni. Alumni are defined as individuals who have earned a degree and/or certificate from LFCC. Terms of office shall be one year.
  • Section 2: The chair shall preside at all meetings of the organization
  • Section 3: The vice chair shall preside in the absence of the chair. Should the office of chair become vacant, the vice chair shall automatically become chair for the remainder of the term for which he/she was elected. He/she shall be the nominee of the Board to succeed the chair.
  • Section 4: The secretary shall take minutes at each meeting and send them to the LFCC Office of College Advancement to be distributed via e-mail.

Article 5. Budget

The budget for the organization shall be maintained by the College in compliance with College and Commonwealth of Virginia and/or LFCC Educational Foundation guidelines and policies.

Article 6. Committees

There shall be the following standing committees of the organization: Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee and the Alumni Reunion Reception Committee. Ad hoc committees may be formed as needed. The chair of the Association shall have the authority to appoint the members of the standing or ad hoc committees. He/She will appoint the chairman of the committees, except as noted otherwise in these bylaws.

  • The Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee shall review nominations and recommend recipients for the award.
  • The Alumni Reunion Reception Committee shall assist the LFCC Office of College Advancement in planning the annual alumni reunion reception.

Article 7. Meetings

  • Section 1: Meetings shall be held at least quarterly.
  • Section 2: Special meetings may be called at any time by the chair of the organization or upon a written request of one-third (1/3) or more active members of the organization. Notice of such meetings shall be e-mailed to all active members of the organization and shall state the reason for which the meeting is being called.
  • Section 3: A quorum of the organization shall be one-third (1/3) of the voting membership.

Article 8. Amendments

These bylaws or any part thereof may be amended or repealed by a majority of the active members of the organization, providing that such amendment or proposed repeal shall have been submitted to the membership at least (30) days prior to the meeting.

Article 9. Dissolution

In the event of this organization's dissolution or the discontinuation of its operations, all available funds and/or assets of this organization shall become the property of Lord Fairfax Community College.
