ADA Improvements – VCCS Systemwide Project

Tell us how we're doing

During the 2008-10 Capital Budget Process the General Assembly authorized $4,000,000 of a $24,000,000 request to address handicap accessibility (ADA) issues within the VCCS.  Since the full request was not funded, total handicap accessibility within the VCCS will have to be achieved in phases.  The first phase will implement system-wide improvements relating to access and entry to facilities that are frequented by students on a regular basis.  Future phases will be determined as additional funding becomes available.

As part of the implementation:

  • Each college will receive a budget to address ADA deficiencies identified in exterior accessible routes, curb cuts, ramps, entrances and exits, doors and gates, and bus stops. Needs that exceed the budget amount will be addressed on a case-by-case basis dependant on funding availability.
  • In order to participate in this ADA improvement program, each college will first correct all inexpensive, readily achievable ADA accommodations, with funds from its own resources. These items include, but are not limited to, the restriping of parking lots and updating of exterior signage.
