According to the State Council for Higher Education and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), tuition and mandatory fees at a VCCS school were $2,269 in 2006-07. By comparison, Virginia's state-supported colleges and universities charged an average of $6,631 in tuition and mandatory fees for the same year. On average, an education at a VCCS school costs approximately one-third less than it does at one of the state's public four-year colleges or universities.
