Travel to Spain with LFCC
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 5, 2014
Lord Fairfax Community College's (LFCC) Study Abroad Program is offering a trip to Salamanca, Spain. LFCC students and community residents will have the opportunity to travel and study from June 2-27, 2014.
Students will earn four academic credits in Spanish 101 "Beginning Spanish" or Spanish 195 "Spanish for Health Professionals."
Community residents may also enroll. Spanish 195 – "Spanish for Health Professionals" was selected as a course option because of the high demand for basic Spanish skills in the medical field.
LFCC Professor Paula Bowen, a resident of Warrenton, VA, will accompany the student group. Bowen has been a Spanish professor at LFCC for 5 years, and previously taught at Wakefield School and Northern Virginia Community College.
The Mester Language School in Salamanca was selected for instruction because it gives international students the opportunity to feel, enjoy and play an active part in the unique Spanish way of life that is significantly different from their own. "I chose Salamanca because it is a vibrant, small city that is easy to explore and perhaps less intimidating for first-time travelers. The Mester Language School has an excellent reputation," explains Bowen.
In addition to completing a semester's worth of introductory Spanish language in one month's time, students will participate in many excursions and local activities. They will live with a host family and take classes in Spanish life and culture.
The cost for the entire June trip – including airfare, room and board, academic credit, various excursions, and travel insurance– is $4,500. The LFCC Foundation has received a generous donation from Mark and Karin Ohrstrom to fund one study abroad scholarship for a currently enrolled LFCC student with financial need.
According to Liv Heggoy, the Executive Director of the LFCC Foundation: "The opportunity to study in another country is an important and often life changing experience. I am grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Ohrstrom's support of LFCC's study abroad program. It will be really exciting to hear about the scholarship recipient's experience in Spain."
The deadline to enroll is February 28, 2014. For more information, please visit http://www.lfcc.edu/?promoid=10297. Interested students may also contact Professor Bowen at firstname.lastname@example.org/540-868-7166.
