News Release

For Immediate Release:
Aug. 6, 2008

MIDDLETOWN and WARRENTON, Va. - The Office of Workforce Solutions and Continuing Education is offering two new classes aimed at meeting the personal needs of individuals in the community.

Following is information about the classes:

  • Parenting: Two Parents and Two Homes - As required by Virginia legislation, parents wanting custody of their children must complete a course that educates parents about how to understand and respond to the needs of their children during separation and divorce. The course is offered at the Fauquier and Middletown Campuses, and the facilitator has been certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia. Attendees will learn:

o About conflicts that put children in the middle of separated parents

o Communication techniques to reduce fears and anxiety in children

o Co-parenting techniques to help children through separation and divorce

o How children at different ages are affected by divorce

o How to recognize the needs of children during separation and divorce

Under no circumstances are children of any age permitted to attend this class. In addition, ex-partners will not be placed in the same class.

  • Driver Improvement - Many courts mandate habitual offenders to complete a driver improvement course. In an effort to provide drivers with a convenient, inexpensive way to improve their driving skills, LFCC is offering an eight-hour online driver improvement course, which is certified by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The course is divided into modules, with review questions at the end of each section. After completing the required reading and review questions, individuals will take their final exam at one of LFCC's Testing Centers. Individuals may complete the course at their own pace.

This course is designed for individuals who are over the age of 20 and who fall into one of the following categories:

o Court Assigned Point Dismissal and Court Assigned Fine Reduction - In many instances, a court may refer an individual to a driver improvement clinic as a part of the sanctions imposed by the court for a particular traffic violation. Also, a court may offer the defendant the opportunity to complete a driver improvement clinic in lieu of more serious alternatives.

o Virginia DMV (Mandatory) - Individuals who have accumulated at least 12 demerit points within a 12-month period or 18 demerit points within a 24-month period are required to attend a driver improvement clinic. Additionally, this course is approved for individuals who have been ordered by the Virginia DMV to attend a driver improvement clinic as the result of a license suspension (accumulation of 18 or 24 demerit points in a 12-month period).

o Virginia DMV (Safe Driver Points-Voluntary) - The Virginia DMV offers a unique program that enables individuals to voluntarily complete a driver improvement clinic in exchange for an additional five safe driving points. These points are added to the safe driving points assigned each year by the Virginia DMV for safe, conviction free driving.

o Insurance Premium Reduction - Taking this course to reduce insurance premiums is at the discretion of individual insurance companies.
