Scholarships Are Crucial During Difficult Economic Times – A Celebration of National Scholarship Month

Written on: May 5, 2009

Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) students are not immune to the challenges that the rest of the nation is facing during these difficult economic times. Fortunately, thanks to the generous support of donors, many LFCC students are receiving financial assistance in the form of scholarships, thus enabling them to continue their education.

In recognition of National Scholarship Month, LFCC would like to thank the many donors who are changing lives and impacting the community. Education and knowledge are vital components to weathering this economic crisis. LFCC is poised to equip students with new skills, but it needs the support of donors to partner with the College to financially assist students who are unable to afford an education.

Following is a glimpse into the lives of two 2008-09 scholarship recipients.

  • Lonsossou Alou moved to the United States in 2005 from Togo, Africa. Lonsossou had always wanted to graduate from high school and college, and now he had his chance. He enrolled at LFCC in pursuit of an associate degree in nursing. The scholarship he received is assisting Lonsossou in accomplishing his goals and easing the financial strain on his parents and four siblings.
  • Betty Anderson put her educational career on hold due to her responsibilities as a wife and mother of two small children. Now that her children are grown, she is focusing on her future and is pursuing a degree. The scholarship she received helped to alleviate some of the financial burden of taking classes and, according to Betty, provided her family with a level of security despite today's economy.

National Scholarship Month is a time to celebrate the many donors who are changing lives and encourage others to do the same. By investing in LFCC, you can impact the community and inspire students.
