Lord Fairfax Community College - Your Future. Our Focus

Transfer: General Guidelines

  1. WHICH COURSES WILL TRANSFER?

Each four-year college makes decisions about which courses from Lord Fairfax will transfer.  A ‘Virginia College and University Transfer Guide’, which provides specific information about the transferability of courses and programs, is available online at http://www.vccs.edu/vccsasr/vccstran.htm.  Students planning to transfer should contact the chief transfer officer at the school they want to attend.  A list of these officers at each Virginia public and private school is online at http://www.schev.edu/AdminFaculty/VCTOcontact.asp.  Students transferring out-of-state should research the school online and follow the guidelines for transfer students.

Students planning to transfer should be in an Associate in Arts & Sciences degree curriculum at Lord Fairfax.  There are eight:

    • Business Administration
    • Education
    • General Studies
    • Liberal Arts
      • Communications Specialization
      • Fine Arts Specialization
      • Philosophy and Religion Specialization
    • Science

Some Associate in Applied Science degrees transfer in part, but students should work closely with their faculty advisors to determine which courses will transfer.

  2. WHAT IS A TRANSFER AGREEMENT OR GUARANTEED ADMISSION?

Lord Fairfax is one of 23 community colleges in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).  The VCCS as well as Lord Fairfax has established agreements guaranteeing admission or course transfer to our students who meet certain requirements, such as completion of an Arts and Science transfer degree with a minimum GPA.  The schools we currently have agreements with are:

  3. SHOULD I GET THE ENTIRE ASSOCIATE DEGREE OR JUST TRANSFER SOME CREDITS?

Having an Associate’s Degree will usually make a student more competitive for admission and the guaranteed admissions agreements require completion of the entire degree.  Some schools only transfer specific courses but each school will have different requirements such as completion of a minimum number of credits or completion of specific courses.  Check with each school to determine the requirements.

*GUARANTEED ADMISSION AGREEMENTS ARE VERY SPECIFIC IN NATURE AND HAVE DETAILED REQUIREMENTS THAT VARY BY SCHOOL.  CHECK WITH THE COUNSELING &ADVISING OFFICE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON EACH AGREEMENT.

  4. WHICH COURSES SHOULD I TAKE?

ENGLISH: Most transfer students will need to take English 111 and 112, College Composition I and II.  *

MATH: Math, science, and business administration students will need to take MTH 163, pre-calculus and higher math courses while liberal arts and general studies majors can take MTH 151-152, Math for the Liberal Arts   *

*Developmental courses may be required before taking English and math.

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE ELECTIVES:  Most colleges require credits in humanities and social science.  Transferable humanities electives usually include art history, music, philosophy, religion, and foreign languages.  Transferable social science electives usually include sociology, psychology, history, political science, economics, and geography.  Students should check with the college to which they plan to transfer for specific course requirements for their degrees.

  5. ARE THERE LIMITS ON THE NUMBER OF CREDITS THAT MAY BE TRANSFERRED?

All colleges limit the number of credits they will accept for transfer and many allow up to half of the total hours required for graduation.  For example, if 120 hours are required for a bachelor’s degree, the college may accept up to 60 hours in transfer.  Students will need to verify the maximum number of transfer credits allowed for each college.

  6. WHAT ABOUT GRADES?

A grade of ‘C’ or better is normally required for a course to be transferred.

  7. WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

Most four-year colleges have very early deadlines for application.  Some schools accept fall transfer students only while others accept fall, spring, and sometimes summer transfers.  Check the application deadline and apply in advance of that date.

  8. CAN I MEET COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES ON CAMPUS AT LFCC?

Student Success sponsors a ‘College Day’ program each fall and spring semester and invites representatives from many colleges to come on campus to talk to transfer students.  Watch the plasma screens for information.

  9. SHOULDN’T I WAIT UNTIL I AM READY TO GRADUATE TO THINK ABOUT TRANSFERRING TO ANOTHER COLLEGE?

Students should begin planning for transfer as soon as possible and definitely during the FIRST semester at LFCC.  Each school will require different courses and students can avoid taking unnecessary classes or missing requirements if they plan ahead.

  10. WHAT IF I WANT TO FIND A SCHOOL THAT IS NOT LISTED IN THE TRANSFER GUIDE?

Two online search engines that allow students to find a college based on many factors such as location, major, tuition, size, sports offered, etc are:www.collegeboard.com (click on college matchmaker) or http://www.petersons.com/college_home.asp?path+ug.home (click on find a school/program).

  11. YOU’RE ON YOUR WAY!

To begin the transfer planning process, students should visit the web sites of the colleges they are interested in and contact both the transfer counselor and the department head of the program to which they wish to be admitted.  We have developed a TRANSFER ROAD MAP that is on the next two pages of this guide to help students in the transfer process.  For additional assistance, students should contact their faculty advisors and/or the Counseling & Advising office, located as follows at each campus:
