State Board Sets Tuition and Fees for 2006-2007 SOUTH BOSTON –The State Board for Community Colleges approved a tuition rate increase of approximately 6.3 percent Thursday, raising tuition and mandatory statewide fees for in-state students at a Virginia community college by $4.50 to $75.65 per credit hour, effective with the summer 2006 semester. A full-time Virginia student taking 30 credit hours a year would pay $2,269.50 in tuition and fees, an increase of $135. Approximately 96 percent of Virginia community college students are state residents. Tuition alone for an in-state student increased $4.50 per credit hour, from $68 to $72.50, and a systemwide technology fee remains the same at $3.15 per credit hour. “This tuition action continues our commitment to provide access and maintain affordability,” says State Board Chairman Chris Lumsden. “When we initiated our Dateline 2009 goals, we adopted a concept of maintaining as much predictability as possible, implementing manageable increases to avoid the spikes in tuition that were implemented in the past,” he added. Chancellor Glenn DuBois says Virginia community colleges remain an excellent value in higher education. With today’s action, the system will be able to “increase the availability of financial aid, particularly for part-time students, and begin progress on hiring more full-time faculty,” he said. Tuition for out-of-state students will increase by 10 percent, from $214 to $235.35 per credit hour, effective with the summer 2006 semester. A tuition differential for Northern Virginia Community College of an additional $5.50 per credit hour was also approved.
