- What classes qualify for this free software?
- All CSC, ITD, ITE, ITN and ITP classes that are more than two credit hours
- Why don't non-IT classes qualify for this software?
- The purpose of the MSDNAA is to provide software to students who are learning the respective application in class. Also, the MSDNAA license is only good for the specific divisions at each location. Each division at Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) has to purchase individual division licenses for each campus if they wish to participate in the program.
- Is Microsoft Office available through this alliance?
- No, Microsoft has not made the Office Suite a part of the agreement. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are not available via the agreement. However, individual applications like Access, OneNote, Groove, and InfoPath are available.
- When can I start checking out or purchasing software?
- Names and VCCS e-mail addresses for eligible students must be provided by the CSC and/or IT faculty at the beginning of each semester. Student accounts will be created within one to two weeks of receiving a list of eligible student names. It is our goal that all eligible students' Virginia Community College System (VCCS) student e-mail addresses will be uploaded to the server that manages our ELMS storefront during the second or third week of classes each semester.
- How do I know when I can check out software?
- After the student accounts have been created in the system, each student will be sent an e-mail to their VCCS student e-mail account, notifying them of availability. This e-mail will provide the URL to the checkout site and the initial password to be used.
- Can I download software?
- Some software can be downloaded. By selecting the software from the ELMS storefront, you will be able to see all options available for that product.

- Are there any differences between the software that I can check out or purchase?
- No, there are no differences. If you check out the software, you just have to install the software on your personal computer and/or burn a copy for yourself and return the original CD/DVD to us.
- Why can't I buy all the software listed on the site?
- The software that is available for purchase has been provided by Microsoft in its partnership with ELMS, our licensing management site.
- Why can I purchase or download some products, but not check them out?
- Currently, those software products are not being studied in the classes here at LFCC -- hence copies have not been made to check out.
- Can I get additional software that is not shown?
- Only the software that is being studied in the classroom is being made available to our students.
- What is the link to the software checkout site?
- What is my login and password for the software checkout site?
- Your login name will be your VCCS e-mail account (ex: jxs0004@email.vccs.edu). Your password is randomly assigned by the licensing management site and is sent to you in an e-mail as soon as the program administrator has created your account in the system.
- Can I install the product on more than one computer?
- The product is available for a single install only. If you have two computers at home and need to install the product on another computer, notify the program administrator at the checkout site. Please be sure to include justification.
- Do I have to uninstall the software when class is over?
- No. However, you cannot receive any updates through the College unless you are enrolled in a qualifying CSC and/or IT class.
- Does the software time out?
- No. The software is the full version and will not expire.
- Can I use this software on a business computer?
- ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! This software is being provided to help students in their studies. Be sure to read the agreement that you must accept at the time of reserving the software or purchasing the software. You are responsible for following the software license agreement and can be held liable if you fail to do so.
- Can I sell this software or give it to a friend or family member?
- ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! This software is being provided to help students in their studies. Be sure to read the agreement that you must accept at the time of reserving the software or purchasing the software. You are responsible for following the license agreement and can be held liable if you fail to do so.
- How do I get a new activation key if I can't find the old one?
- You can see your original activation key on the software site. Click on "My Software," then click on the order number, and then the download link for the software title. Your key will then be displayed.
- What do I do with a file with an ISO extension?
- The ISO extension is used for files that meet a standard used to create CD images. Software such as Roxio CD Creator or Nero Burning ROM are required to burn a CD from that file. There are also programs available to extract the files from an ISO file.
- I downloaded the file but it's very small. How do I get the software I wanted?
- The download site does not work well with browsers other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. Rename the downloaded file with an .exe extension and run that file, which will initiate the download of the software package requested. Changing a file extension usually changes the icon for the file. To be sure you can see file extensions, open My Computer (or any File Explorer window) and on the Tools menu choose Folder Options. On the View tab, in the Advanced Settings area, uncheck the checkbox for Files and Folders\Hide (file) extensions for known file types. Apply the change.
- How is software distributed to students?
- Software will be available through a "download center." This download center is managed as an E-Academy License Management System (ELMS) "storefront." All software orders must be placed through LFCC's ELMS storefront. Software that is available for checkout can be picked up at the library at your home campus.
