English Language Academy at LFCC
Begin Your College Studies With Confidence and Success
The English Language Academy includes courses and academic support for LFCC students who have learned English as a second or third language. Students from diverse language backgrounds who attend LFCC can receive
- placement testing
- referrals to community programs for beginning or intermediate language training
- special sections of English 01 and 111
- ESL 7, Oral Communications course (offered in the spring, currently at Middletown only)
- tutoring
- diagnostic testing
- individualized education plans
- software and web-based resources
ESL Sections at Middletown, Spring 2008:
- ENG-01, section 00A, Preparing for College Writing, MWF 10-10:50 a.m. (3 hours per week)
- ESL-07, section 00A, Oral Communications, WF 1-2:15 p.m. (3 hours per week)
- ENG-111, section 03A, College Composition, MWF 12-12:50, (3 hours per week)
- ESL Open Lab 1: Mondays , 1 to 2 p.m., room 319
- ESL Open Lab 2: Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon, room 319
ESL Section at Fauquier
- ENG-01, section 01B, Preparing for College Writing, MW, 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Testing is required for these classes. Students should contact Dr. Moore at mmoore2@lfcc.edu or 540-868-7173 for further information.
Additional Information:
The Student Learning Center at Middletown (Room 319) also includes 5 laptop computers reserved for ESL students. Students may check these laptops out for use on campus to practice grammar, pronunciation, writing, reading, listening, and vocabulary. Also, computers in the lab contain software for business English, grammar practice, and listening practice. If you need help with these programs, or if you would like an individual study plan, contact Dr. Moore.
Students at Fauquier may also request an individual learning plan by contacting Dr. Moore.
Grammar Resources
These sites offer instruction and practice on grammar. Sites allow you to choose your level of difficulty and a specific structure.

These resources will help you improve your speaking skills and your listening skills. Many of the sites include simple quizzes with immediate feedback.

These sites give you practice in reading for speed and for comprehension. The Reading Matters sites offer practice in timed readings with follow-up questions.
