Step 2: Exploring the possibilities

Information is available to help you take a closer look at careers you are considering as well as to explore academic majors associated with your interests.  Information at these sites includes:  occupational descriptions, required training, growth within the job market, and salary data.  Print the results of the occupations and college majors of most interest to you.

Part 1:  Investigating the World of Work

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook: This is one of the most comprehensive career resources available online for free. Occupational Clusters can be searched to explore a variety of career choices.  A keyword search option is available to aid in exploring specific fields of study such as computers, communications, medical, etc.  This is an excellent search site for the individual who can identify a few important abilities or interests but does not know the specific jobs associated with these areas.
  • VIRGINIA VIEW: Information about job growth and outlook is presented at this site.  Select Students, Virginia View Resources, List of Occupations
  • America’s Career Info Net: Terrific website for gaining an overall perspective of what is happening in the American workforce.  Provides up-to-date information about the fastest growing and highest paying career fields along with other useful career information and trends.

Part 2:  Examining College Majors

  • What Can I Do with this Major/Degree?:  If you need help in identifying what career positions you can fulfill with a specific major, this site will definitely help you.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view this information.
